What is period poverty?

Period poverty is a hidden poverty that affects an estimated one in four women in the UK, and young girls are struggling the most. Looking more closely, 10% of girls have been unable to afford period products such as tampons or pads, and 12% have had to improvise when on their period. This can mean girls are wearing unsuitable substitutes for tampons and pads, such as socks or tissue paper.

Perhaps most concerning is that nearly half of girls in the UK (49%) have missed an entire day of school because of their period.

For as long period stigma persists, the real facts and numbers will remain unclear. According to the research by Plan International UK, 1 in 10 girls have been asked not to talk about their periods in front of their parents.

What are we doing to help?

As of this week we’re stocking a variety of items in reception for anyone to help themselves should they feel the need. Passers by can pop in, discreetly pick up items for themselves or a family member, and not have to say a word to anybody – unless they want to of course!

The tampons and pads will be available from the far left side of reception as you walk in the front door, beside the leaflet stand.

Free tampons and pads are now available from our reception.
