""We’re looking for tenants who would be interested in joining the Harbour Homes Board. To get a sense of what it’s all about, we had a chat with Board Member and tenant Leigh Eardley about her experience.

What made you want to join the Board?

Having worked in the Legal field for over 30 years, I wanted to become involved in something a little different than what I was used to, without looking for a new job. I saw an advert from Harbour Homes looking for a tenant to become a Board Member, and after persuasion from a colleague that I could absolutely do this, I applied.

How has being a Board Member impacted you?

I feel very invested, maybe more so than I ever thought I would be. Harbour Homes and its Board really does at every turn, attempt to have tenants and the community at the forefront. That is not always easy whilst balancing the needs of the business, but it is absolutely the priority.

What are you most proud of achieving in your time as Board Member so far?

Successfully interviewing for the position of Vice Chair for both Harbour Multi-Trades and Harbour Connections. My confidence has definitely grown. I don’t think I said more than a couple of words at my first few meetings. I was terrified that any questions I asked would be deemed stupid or that other Board Members would think I was incapable. I’m constantly being pushed out of my comfort zone which is scary, but shows that my fellow Board Members have faith in my ability.

What is your most memorable Board experience?

I don’t know if I have a memorable Board experience as such, but coming from a very corporate background, I automatically assumed that Board meetings would be extremely formal and stuffy. That is not the case at all. The Board meetings are super friendly with plenty occasions for humour.

That said, being a member of a Board is an incredibly important and privileged position to hold, and should be respected. The role of the Board is to oversee the organisation’s management, strategic direction and

governance, and there are often difficult decisions to be made. The position of a Board Member shouldn’t be taken lightly or for granted.

Who would you love to see join the Board from our tenant community?

It would be great to have a tenant join the Board who has real ties to, and is passionate about the community.

What’s one thing you would tell someone who’s unsure about becoming a Board Member?

Go for it. You don’t need a degree or university education. You just need common sense and a genuine interest in being involved.
