Health Issues in the Community (HIIC) course training sessions

Do you work or volunteer in Leith, Restalrig or Granton in the third sector?

Health Issues in the Community (HIIC) is a course that helps people understand what affects their health and the health of their communities. HIIC helps people develop the skills and knowledge to address health issues using community development approaches and bring about change in their communities.

Through a small grant from Edinburgh PACT’s Capacity to Collaborate fund, Edinburgh Community Food, Inspiring Leith, YMCA and Port of Leith Housing Association will be running a HIIC course in Leith in early 2023.

Meanwhile, we’ve invited the Scottish Community Development Centre to deliver some training sessions so staff and volunteers can be better informed and help to recruit participants to the course.

We want to give local community or support workers who might not be familiar with the course the chance to find out more about it and what it might be like for people who want to participate.

We have a small amount of funds to support local community workers to attend the full HIIC training for trainers if these sessions inspire you!

What we will cover in our training sessions

These sessions are designed to be a mixture of experiencing the training pack itself and having the opportunity to ask questions about the pack, its delivery and impact.

We would expect to cover exercises from the main elements of the course – social model of health, health inequalities, power and participation and community development approaches so that you get to experience HIIC in action.

We will be guided by the input and questions of the participants.

Session 1: 7 September 2022

  • Social model of health exercises and discussion
  • Guiding principles and objectives of HIIC
  • Design of training pack

Session 2: 14 September 2022

  • Power and participation exercises and discussion
  • The delivery of the pack and popular education
  • Challenges for participants and the support required
  • Impact of HIIC – some examples from other communities

Session 3: 21 September 2022

  • Community development exercises and discussion
  • The power of the group project
  • SQA accreditation – requirements of participants
  • How to become a tutor
