We’d like to make all tenants aware of upcoming changes to Scottish housing law this year. Several of the changes will take place from 1 August, and further changes will come into force on 6 October 2026.
What’s changing in the law?
The Scottish Government has published new Model Scottish Secure Tenancy and Short Scottish Secure Tenancy Agreements for use from 1 August 2026. A letter has been sent to all tenants outlining the key changes to be aware of, including:
- New powers to help victim-survivors of domestic abuse remain safely in their home
- Changes to succession rules for Scottish secure tenancies
- Increased options on how rent increase notices are issued
- New right for tenants seeking permission to keep a pet
What does this mean for you?
For most tenants, there is nothing you need to do at this stage. These changes are intended to strengthen tenant protections, improve support for for people affected by domestic abuse, and update how some tenancy rights operate. We will continue to keep all tenants informed as further changes are introduced.
